AFMS Lunch & Learn September (free for members, please note, this L&L session will not be recorded):
Assessing Types of Coercive Controlling Violence (CCV) for Family Mediators
A 1-hour webinar, September 15, 2026 -- 12pm MST via Zoom
As Courts continue to increase attention on the role of family violence in family law matters, mediators will require clearer methods of identifying not only instances of intimate partner or family violence, but also patterns of violence.
In this presentation, elaborating on his forthcoming peer-reviewed article (Singh & Hendry, in press), Dr. Singh guides the audience through the factors that comprise a clear definition of coercive controlling violence (“CCV”, also called “coercive control”) and presents a framework for differentiating between different types of CCV, alongside relevant implications.
Dr. Terry Singh is a Clinical and Forensic Psychologist at Alberta Family Psychology in Calgary, Alberta. He has received Board Certification in Couple and Family Psychology by the American Board of Professional Psychology (ABPP), and his areas of special interest include working with high-conflict families of divorce and separation, mediation/arbitration, child custody evaluation, and consideration of cultural factors in assessment and treatment.
Dr. Singh sits on the Board of Directors of the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts (AFCC), serves as the Chair of the Family Psychology section of the Canadian Psychological Association, and is the Vice President of AFCC’s Alberta Chapter.
