Speaker Bios

Doug Moe, K.C. is a senior family lawyer with over 37 years of experience, primarily focusing on mediation and arbitration of family law disputes. He frequently serves as a mediator or arbitrator in hybrid processes that combine both methods. Doug also helps select clients resolve disputes through negotiation, collaborative law, and, when necessary, litigation.

Recognized for his contributions to the profession, Doug has received several prestigious awards, including the Distinguished Service Award from the Law Society of Alberta and the Canadian Bar Association (CBA) in 2016, and the AFMS John Haynes Award in both 2010 and 2018 for his work in family mediation. He was designated King's Counsel (K.C.) and is consistently ranked in the highest categories for legal ability and ethical standards by Martindale-Hubbell. He is also listed among the "Best Lawyers" in Family Law and Family Law Mediation.

Doug has a strong history of volunteerism and leadership, having chaired both local and national CBA Family Law Sections and served on the Alberta Law Society’s Family Law Advisory Committee. He has been an instructor for the Bar Admission Course, guest-lectured at the University of Calgary Law School, and presented at various conferences on topics such as property division and mediation/arbitration.

Doug remains a sought-after mentor and continues to be actively involved in the legal community, sitting on the steering committee of the Alberta Family Lawyer’s Association (AFLA). He has also provided advice to federal and provincial justice departments and regularly presents papers on family law topics.

Doug’s approach to family law is often referred to as practicing “Moe Law,” reflecting a commitment to better handling family cases. Outside of his professional work, Doug was recognized as a “Local Hero” by the Calgary Herald for his involvement with children’s charities. He is married, a father of three, and a grandfather of four.

Kevin Hannah K.C. is a senior divorce lawyer, mediator and arbitrator at Moe Hannah LLP and has been there since its inception in 1997.  He has previous criminal law and general litigation experience.  He has practiced almost exclusively in the areas of separation and divorce for 35 years.  In the last 5 years he has restricted his practice almost exclusively to mediating and arbitrating in family law.  In 2020 he was awarded the Dr. John Haynes Memorial Award by AFMS for outstanding contribution to family mediation.

Kevin has been recognized by his peers and listed in Best Lawyers as one of the leading family lawyers in the city of Calgary every year since it began in 2006. In 2014, 2021 and 2024 Kevin was named “Lawyer of the Year” in family law and/or family mediation. Since 2011, he has also been recognized each year by Best Lawyers as a leading ADR (alternative dispute resolution) lawyer for his work in divorce mediation and arbitration.  Other peer review organizations (i.e., those listing lawyers based on private voting by other lawyers) in which he is recognized as a leading family lawyer and mediator include the Lexpert Legal Directory and Doyles Leading Family and Divorce Lawyers, all peer review organizations.

In 2018 when the government of Alberta was revising its legislation on sharing property following divorce or separation Kevin was retained to advise the Minister of Justice on the changes to the Matrimonial Property Act and the new Family Property Act of Alberta.

Kevin has taught and spoken on family law topics many times to other lawyers, law students (guest lecturer at University of Calgary Law School and Graduate School of Psychology) and legal professionals through lectures, papers and seminars, including many presentations through the Legal Education Society of Alberta.

He has written family law articles in Lawyers Weekly and has volunteered on several law-related boards. He has also volunteered for several years with Calgary Legal Guidance, providing free legal advice to those with limited means.

Brad Mustard, K.C. is a family law lawyer with over 20 years of experience, specializing in mediation and arbitration. His practice focuses on helping clients resolve complex family law issues efficiently. He serves as an Arbitrator, Mediator, Parenting Coordinator, and Collaborative Lawyer, guiding clients toward out-of-court resolutions in a cost-effective and practical manner.

Brad's expertise includes resolving complex property and support matters, as well as creating parenting plans that minimize conflict for children. He understands that many clients seek counsel who solve problems rather than create them. His years of courtroom experience have taught him that litigation should be a last resort. However, when necessary, Brad represents clients in court and contested hearings.

In 2016, Brad earned his Master of Laws (LLM) in Alternative Dispute Resolution from Osgoode Law School. He is a frequent presenter on negotiation and mediation at the University of Calgary Faculty of Law, the Canadian Bar Association (CBA), and the Legal Education Society of Alberta. From 2017 to 2020, he co-instructed the Dispute Resolution block week at the University of Calgary.

Brad has a strong commitment to volunteering in Calgary, having served as:

- Chair of the Association of Collaborative Lawyers

- Chair of the Distress Centre Calgary

- Board Member of the Veterans Transition Network

Within the family law profession, Brad has contributed as Chair of the CBA Family Law South subsection, member of the CBA National Family Law Subsection, and a member of the Judicial Advisory Committee on Improving Family Law Court Processes. He currently serves as a Board Member of the Alberta Family Mediation Society and acts as a Dispute Resolution Officer at the Calgary Courts Centre.
